Featured! This poem was written by Braden River High School student Ari Smith.
The powerful Hurricane Milton passed through our state a few months ago, but its impact lingers long even after our skies have cleared. One of our students from the River has channeled the shared experiences of loss, resilience, and hope into a personal poem.
Etude of the Eye
Out the slotted window, stare
Listen to the rippling air
To meddle with the nature's force?
Or stand and watch? It runs its course
The howling wind, sardonic chorus
Telling us it is coming for us
Blast-full force to contravene
Humanity and public mean
Gluttonous as sky, it drinks
To power up as wet ground sinks
And in its wake is naught but squalor
As all the winds proceed to holler
Vexed be those who claim their stay
As out to sea, to their dismay,
The tides remove their earthly home,
So left are they, to walk and roam
In adversity, we stand
United in this land
This fight we pose against weather
We're in this, all together
